IaaS picks up head of steam

While adoption is still much slower than that of Software as a Service (SaaS), the market for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings is picking up steam.

According to a new report from analyst firm Yankee Group, 24% of large enterprises with Cloud experience are already using IaaS, and an additional 37% expect to adopt it during the next 24 months. Sixty percent of enterprises considering IaaS in the next 24 months are actually planning to implement it in the next 12 months.

IaaS allows companies to pay a service provider for virtual servers and storage, based on usage, rather than investing in their own hardware and software.

The majority of all Cloud adopters view systems integrators as their most trusted partners for Cloud Computing (29%), IaaS early adopters say telecom companies are best positioned for Cloud services (33%).

“The desire to adopt is there, but IaaS solutions and providers still have some barriers to address,” said Sandra Palumbo, Yankee Group research fellow. As adoption plans begin to mount, the time is now for service providers, systems integrators and others to solidify their solutions and address the lingering concerns around the Cloud.”

Companies that are considering using IaaS ranked virtualization security as the top barrier to adoption. But those that have already deployed IaaS rank regulatory compliance, data migration, reliability, employee use and quantitative benefits higher. "Some of that is companies not fully understanding what the cloud is, and once a business starts trying it out and using it, they see that security issues aren't as great as they're made out to be," said Palumbo.
