Come and get your data, EMC tells customers as Atmos Cloud storage shuts down

EMC is shutting down its Atmos Online Cloud storage service immediately and warning users to come and move their data as soon as possible.

EMC launched Atmos Online in May 2009, calling it “Cloud Optimized Storage [with] capabilities that can scale effectively, coupled with security and management tools.”  But this effectively placed EMC in direct competition with some of its service provider partners who used EMC’s Atmos technology to provide Cloud storage to its customers.

This week EMC suddenly announced that its hosted storage service will be phased out immediately. It urged customers to retrieve their data and shift it to another provider as soon as possible, but offered no guarantee that any current users storing data on it will be able to retrieve it in the future.

"As a result, we strongly encourage that you migrate any critical data or production workloads currently served via Atmos Online to one of our partners offering Atmos based services," EMC said in a statement posted on its website.

EMC said Atmos Online will remain available strictly as a development environment to foster adoption of Atmos technology and Atmos Cloud services "offered by our continuously expanding range of Service Provider partners who offer production services."
