A good example of what should become probable as the cloud separates services from technology stacks, making the latter a matter of appropriate choice, can be seen in the development of a critical financial transaction cloud datacentre by US-based Ganart Technologies.
What Ganart is aiming at is to bring consumable banking to the masses. It has put into the cloud software and systems that aim to offer customers consistency with their financial services from end to end.
The company’s datacentre is organised as a cloud. This allows it to deliver what it terms `transactions-as-a-service’, a model which enables business partners to just pay for the transactions that are used. The partners can exploit this financial transaction cloud to offer services ranging from money transfers to cashing cheques without the need for set-up processes, or the consequent fees.
These partners can then provide services through the company’s ATM network. This means that customers are presented with multi-function kiosks. The potential here is that the range and richness of the functions available that spin off the core transaction service will grow. What is more, because the Ganart service is located in the cloud, they will be able to exploit it regardless of its technology stack or their own technology stack.
In practice, Ganart is using Red Hat’s Enterprise Virtualization and Enterprise Linux to run Dell server clusters. This choice of technology stack is partly historic, in that Ganart started running its datacentre on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and partly pragmatic, because in tests against VMware’s virtualisation technologies Red Hat’s Enterprise Virtualisation proved to offer benefits on cost, performance, scalability and security in the company’s specific environment.
