Netsuite’s SuiteCloud Platform-as-a-Service offering will become increasingly key in defining the company’s future direction and helping it boost its vertical market presence, chief technology officer Evan Goldberg has signalled.

During his first ever keynote for the Software-as-a-Service vendor, which took place at its SuiteWorld customer conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Goldberg said:

When I think about the direction that NetSuite is going to take over the next few years, I have to focus on the SuiteCloud platform. It is increasingly used by us to drive the innovation of the platform itself. Our goal with development is to go wide, go deep, and innovate. In all verticals we will have new editions…e-commerce, manufacturing and wholesale distribution, service-based businesses, and software specifically.

Chief executive Zach Nelson has in the past signalled the importance of encouraging vertical market ISVs and developers to create applications and modules to build out and complement its core ERP offering.  In August last year, he told our sister site myCustomer.com:

We think the battle for ERP-based suites in the mid-market will ultimately come down to three providers: Netsuite, SAP and Microsoft.

In order to take on such competitors effectively as they increasingly turn their attention to the SaaS space, it will be crucial for the firm to develop a credible partner ecosystem, particularly in the vertical market space, that can at least rival theirs’.

As for further expected developments in terms of Netsuite’s SaaS-based offering, the focus will be on making it more customisable and adding support for more mobile and social applications. Goldberg added:

Our customers made it clear to use they want NetSuite to be extremely customisable. We now have SuiteScript Web apps that help unify HTML and ‘suitelets’, giving you the ability to create dynamic web pages. We also want to explore doing more with mobile and social applications as well as getting actionable intelligence out of the system.
